The Felsenkeller area was built in the area of the old Buschmühle in 1857-58 by the share association of the Brauerei zum Felsenkeller, which was one of the largest in Germany until 1900. The nine tunnels, each driven 60 meters deep into the rock as storage cellars and connected to one another by a 140 meter long corridor, are now part of an industrial park. Resident here is, inter alia. an underground laboratory established in 1983. Today, scientists from Rossendorf and Dresden are researching 45 meters deep in the rock in the field of dark matter. The nearby ice worm storage facility for ice to cool the beer was named after an anecdote from 1862: An ice worm in the storage cellars consumed the ice, so that the beer would go bad.
