The parish church of Wijchmaal is dedicated to Saint Trudo. And that immediately reminds you of Sint-Truiden, which is quite a distance from this sub-municipality of Peer. No coincidence: Wijchmaal (just like Peer, where the church, known as the 'Reus der Kempen', was also dedicated to Sint-Trudo), was part of the Abbey of Sint-Truiden in the eleventh century, even before it came into the hands of the County of Loon.

Abbot Abelard II of Sint-Truiden had a church building built or restored in the eleventh century and it was probably dedicated to Saint Trudo, who is the foundation of the abbey in Sint-Truiden. That old church has long since disappeared and the current neo-Romanesque church, built in 1878, which had to replace the marlstone church that had become too small and dilapidated, is also dedicated to Saint Trudo. Something important from the past has been preserved: the Gothic tower from the fifteenth century.

The church is quietly located on the beautiful village square (with ample parking). There are several old cast iron crosses in the cemetery. You will also find a Lourdes cave, some statues, a monument for the victims of both world wars and a memorial plaque for the fallen crew members of an aircraft that crashed in the Second World War (see below).

There is a memorial plaque on the church of Wijchmaal for the deceased crew of a Wellington Z1614 KO-R that crashed in the village on May 31, 1942. The crew was first buried by the Luftwaffe as unknown British airmen in Sint-Truiden and then moved to the British military cemetery in Heverlee. It was only in 1990 that it was discovered that it was the five crew members who lost their lives in Wijchmaal. The memorial stone is a tribute from the Wijchmaal historical circle. More about this (and the source) at hangarflying.eu/erfgoedsites/gedenkplaat-voor-de-bemanning-van-wellington-z1614-ko-r-115-sqn

Nearby there is also a memorial to the victims of the world wars.
