Modern milk production can also be combined with pasture farming. In Lower Saxony, almost 70 percent of dairy cows graze on pasture. Nevertheless, pasture farming is trending downward. The larger a farm is, the more often the cows live in box stalls without pasture. In November 2019, 323 milk-producing farms in Ammerland kept an average of 106 cows (LSN, Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture 2019).
