        History

Horn Castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Knights Mule. They had received the land near Gristede in 1247 in exchange for their Delmenhorst lands with the Counts of Oldenburg.

In 1456, the Knight Rembert Mule transferred all of his property to the Count of Oldenburg and received it back as a fief. In the late 15th century, the Lords of Westerholt were enfeoffed with the castle, which later became their own property. Between 1636 and 1641, the castle was demolished and replaced by a new manor house, and a garden was laid out on the site of the granary. After the Westerholt family died out in the male line following a duel, the Horn estate was inherited by a Junker von Bilsky. After this, the estate came to the Ovie family via Jacob Friedrich von Varendorff. The existing classicist manor house was built in 1858. The old manor house was reused as a stable building.
