The complex referred to here as the monastery is the Abbey of Saint Mary, a monastery founded by the Benedictines in the city center of Fulda in 1626 consisting of the convent, the monastery church, handicraft workshops, a monastery shop and a 2000 m² monastery garden. The monastery was able to escape the threat of secularization in 1804 by taking over a girls' school. In 2006/2007 facilities and the convent building were renovated and on June 28, 2007 the newly built St. Lukas House was inaugurated.
The monastery is still in operation, 16 sisters currently live and work in the community. Since the garden is part of the cloister area of the monastery, you can only take a look at the sisters' kitchen garden from the small terrace of the monastery shop. The monastery church can be visited outside of church services and retreats.

The foundation stone for the construction of the church and monastery was laid in 1626 by the Prince-Abbot of Fulda, Johann Bernhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg. The monastery was occupied in 1631 by four Benedictine nuns from Kühbach Abbey near Augsburg. Salome von Pflaumern served as the first prioress from 1631 onward. The early decades were marked by great hardship due to the Thirty Years' War; the sisters were forced to flee from enemy troops several times, and the monastery was repeatedly plundered. It remained dependent on the Bishopric of Fulda until its secularization in 1802.

The monastery escaped the threat of secularization in 1804 by taking over a girls' school. During the Kulturkampf (Culture Struggle), the sisters were forced into exile in France from 1875 to 1887. After their return in 1898, the monastery was elevated to an abbey by Pope Leo XIII.

During the Nazi era in 1942, the sisters were prevented from being expelled again by making part of the buildings available to the Wehrmacht, and later sheltering bombed-out refugees and war refugees from World War II within the monastery walls. A bombing in 1944 destroyed the roofs and windows. In the 1950s, new windows were installed and the church interior was renovated to reflect the times.
