Tips

  • The mill from the 15th century has been grinding flour again since 2021, from which bread is baked in the bakery opposite. You can taste it in the tavern, where only local meat, fish and vegetables are served alongside local beers and organic wines.

Still hungry? Restaurant Ter Swaelm, one door down, is famous for its ribs and côte a l'os.

  • The IJzerkot mill was first mentioned in 1412. The original mill was located on the left bank of the Zwalm and had various functions over the centuries: flour mill, paper mill, iron forging mill, copper mill and oil mill. At the end of the 18th century, the mill was expanded with a flour mill on the other bank of the Zwalm and the building then functioned as a double mill until 1897. The oil mill on the left bank was converted into a brewery for Fidoul beer, while the flour mill on the right bank remained in operation. until 1954.

The historic building on the left bank now houses a traditional bakery and tavern. The impressive 18th century flour mill with no fewer than 4 grinding couples and an oat crusher still stands on the right bank.

The IJzerkot mill has been grinding again since 2021. The mill exclusively processes domestic baking grains from organically certified farmers who we know personally and who work according to the principles of agroecology. The grains are ground on stone, retaining the nutritious germ, without additives.

  • The IJzerkotmolen is a centuries-old industrial watermill on the Zwalm. In the 16th century, paper was made here and later iron was forged, copper was struck and oil was pressed. The mill used to be a double mill with two undershot wheels. Now only grain is milled here with an iron overshot wheel, which has a diameter of 3 meters and can drive four stone couples and a bowl.
    IJzerkotmolen is a protected monument.
Feel free to take a look through the small windows and see how they play tricks in front of your eyes 😜.
