From the 18th to the mid-20th century there was a flourishing brick-making industry in this region. The Scheldt clay was very suitable for this.
There were brickworks in Oudenaarde, Eine, Heurne, Zingem, Meilegem, Asper, Gavere, Semmerzake, Dikkelvenne, Vurste, Eke, Zevergem, ...

During the reconstruction after the Second World War, a lot of brick was needed, which meant a last heyday for the mostly family businesses. Around 1960, the Scheldt clay had been baked out... and it could no longer compete with the larger, modern brick kilns, such as those found in the Boom region, among others.

There are several extensive wells along the Scheldt. It is what the clay extraction of the brickworks has left behind.
