In the west, the connection to the Rhine is established via the Dortmund-Ems Canal and Rhine-Herne Canal or Wesel-Datteln Canal. In the east, the Elbe-Havel Canal, Untere Havel Waterway and Havel-Oder Waterway connect the Mittelland Canal with the Oder. In a European dimension, it enables a connection between the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland on the one hand with Poland and the Czech Republic on the other.
