The Rendsburg high bridge with the transporter bridge is the symbol of Rendsburg. The high bridge between Rendsburg and Österrönfeld owes its construction to the military: the construction of the Kiel Canal since 1887 was intended to increase the maneuverability of the German Navy between the North and Baltic Seas. Since the swing bridges that were initially built only allowed one type of traffic, it was decided when the canal was widened in 1907-1914 to build a 2,486 m long iron structure including two earthen embankments with a total length of around 4,500 m, which could be used by trains with the usual slight incline and at the same time by ships could be happened. Completed shortly before the First World War as the largest building in the German Empire, civilian use has dominated since then as the crossing point of three traffic routes: a waterway, a railway line and a country road, which is connected by the attached transporter bridge.

Unfortunately, the transporter bridge is currently defective and will probably not be operational for a long time.

A great way to cross the Kiel Canal. The transporter bridge (originally built in 1913 and renewed in 2022) is not only available for pedestrians and bicycles, but can also carry up to 4 cars. Use is free for everyone.

When you consider that this building is more than 100 years old and how much effort is required for the train to get up and down there, you can only take your hat (or in our case your helmet) off. It is also a great way to cross the Kiel Canal with the transporter bridge. The transporter bridge (originally built in 1913 and renewed in 2022) is not only available for pedestrians and bicycles, but can also carry up to 4 cars. Use is free for everyone.
