Two thousand years ago, Sint-Lievens-Houtem was located on the Roman highway Veldeke-Asse-Tongeren. As a reminder of this, “the Roman”, a high bronze Roman soldier, was erected on the Balei. A statue by artist Robert Goossens that was inaugurated on September 5, 2004.

The place where this statue is located, the Balei, is the highest point of Sint-Lievenshoutem (83m above sea level).
The image refers to the 'Ouden Heirweg', the Roman military road Boulogne-Asse-Tongeren, which passed here.From 1596 onwards the local gallows stood on the Balei. The name of the slope comes from Banlo, which means 'forest for justice'.Sources:
