Early 2009, the municipality of Wetteren purchased a historically valuable forest area of several hectares in the Serskampse Beek Valley, which also contained several silted-up ponds. The area was later expanded further by purchasing an adjacent cornfield. The Agency for Nature and Forests took over the management of the purchased plots. The densely overgrown ponds were cleared, exotic tree species were uprooted and native trees and shrubs were planted on the former cornfield.

Given its young age, you will not find any meter-high trees or dense vegetation in this forest, but the fauna is clearly not bothered by this. Today, the ponds of the Paelepelbos are the habitat of the protected crested newt. Numerous breeding birds and small warblers have also made their nests here.
