A landmark shines at the highest point of Cotthem. A 360° view over the region unfolds, with the church of Hillegem and the Cotthembos as eye-catchers. The milestone in blue stone is located at a crossroads of agricultural roads and is a realization of Heemkunde Houtem. On the other side is a Calvary cross. The path now called the Oudeheerweg would have been a Roman highway 2,000 years ago. Nearby are the foundations of three possible Gallo-Roman villas, says Ignace Van der Kelen (75), chairman of Heemkunde Houtem, who has been delving into the subject for years.
