St. Peter's Church was first mentioned in a document by Provost Heinrich from 1301 as ecclesia sancti Petri in insula Raceborg. The parish of St. Peter was therefore founded in the second half of the 13th century, because in the Ratzeburg tithe register the castle field, on which the town of Ratzeburg later arose, still belonged to the parish of Schmilau. When Ratzeburg was bombarded as a result of the Lauenburg succession dispute in 1693, St. Peter's Church was one of the few buildings that remained undamaged, but was finally demolished in 1787 because it was in disrepair.
