The church called "Old Church" today is the original parish church of St. Dionysius von Welbergen. The parish of Welbergen was (probably) first mentioned in a document in 1151 when Bishop Werner von Münster transferred a tithe. The oldest parts of the single-nave village church certainly also date from the 12th century. These include the massive tower and the lower nave. This Romanesque church was supplemented with a Gothic choir in 1511 and the nave was raised. This building development can still be clearly seen from the north side: below the quarry stone from the Romanesque period, above it the half-timbered addition from the early 16th century and today's choir from the same period. Finally, in the 19th century, the sacristy was added to the choir, so that the central choir window merges into it today. The high altar at that time had covered the window anyway.

"Welbergen is home to one of the oldest preserved parish churches in the Münsterland: the oldest parts of the parish church of St. Dionysius date from the early 12th century and thus from the Romanesque period. When the late Gothic choir was added (1511), the nave was increased, recognizable in the half-timbering on the north side. Inside you can see some wall painting fragments from the time the choir was built, probably depictions of the apostles. The church was thoroughly repaired in 1954. " (Source: wikipedia.de)

It's nice that this church is still used for concerts and the like. Is being used. It gives the place a very nice character. The enclosure of the church with the Way of the Cross and the cemetery are also interesting.
