Kind of a spooky place considering how many people were buried there due to the plague.
July 20, 2022
The plague cemetery was a burial site established in the Middle Ages away from settlement centers for the rapid burial of victims of epidemics, particularly those of the plague. It usually supplemented the churchyard, where the deceased were usually buried with a church ceremony. During such epidemics, the victims were often buried quickly and without any ceremony, sometimes in mass graves. Only after the epidemic had subsided were joint church ceremonies often held for all those buried. Many plague cemeteries were closed by the 19th century at the latest, usually even earlier; however, they were sometimes still used, such as the Old Cemetery formerly used by deaconesses in Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda, which is still open as a burial site today.
