Since the creation of the outer city walls at the end of the 13th century, mills have adorned Bruges' city fortresses. They had an important economic function until well into the 19th century. Today there are still four copies on the Kruisvest. The Sint-Janshuismolen (anno 1770), the only mill that can still be visited, retained its original site and still grinds grain.
