Be sure to drive/walk around the entire harbor basin, because there are also interesting places to discover here! You certainly have to smile about some "old" ships... the museum ship "Hans Beimler", which was built by the Russians for the NVA in 1986 and then decommissioned again in 1990, only four years later!!! Since then it has been a museum ship ;-)
In the vicinity of the now wrecked Russian submarine, delicious fish sandwiches are sold directly from a ship!

Peenemünde was known by the Army Research Institute Peenemünde ("Peenemünde-East") and the test center of the Luftwaffe "Peenemünde-West" from 1936 to 1945. In 1936, the Wehrmacht acquired the entire island north of Karlshagen to the Peenemünder Haken of the city of Wolgast and private individuals. The population had to leave the place, only five inhabitants remained as civil employees of the HVA (Army Research Institute Peenemünde). Since the flood of 1872 2.64 m, that of 1904 with 1.90 m and that of 1913 with 1.91 m on the meantime built dike of 1.8 m still exceeded in 1939, the dike from Peenemünder hook to the port Karlshagen increased to 4.0 m. Sand was poured into the dike from the harbor basin, the Peene river and the Baltic Sea in large quantities so that the level for the whole village environment and the HVA areas could be increased by 2.0 m.
