Meuselwitz stands out mainly because of its small, picturesque market and the orangery in Von-Seckendorff-Park.

After Altenburg and Schmölln, Meuselwitz is the third largest town in the Thuringian district of Altenburger Land and the third largest municipality in the district in terms of area. The small town is located in the border triangle with Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt on the southern edge of the Leipzig lowlands between Altenburg in the south-east and Zeitz in the north-west as well as Gera in the south-west and Leipzig in the north-east.

The town was initially shaped by the work of the von Seckendorff family from the 17th century, but from 1860 Meuselwitz was transformed into a lignite industrial town. Various buildings worth seeing have survived from both periods, the first includes the orangery and the park as well as the town church in the baroque style and the latter includes the neo-Gothic town hall from 1874. Meuselwitz has also had town rights since that year.

Part of the city was destroyed by bombing raids in 1944 and 1945 and 250 people lost their lives.
