History
The lake was created from the remaining pit of the Phönix-Hemmendorf open-cast mine, which mined lignite from 1939 to 1948. The lake is now a popular tourist destination in the region. On the western bank near the beach there are toilets, a kiosk and a children's playground. The remaining banks are surrounded by forest. The lake is popular precisely because of its good water quality.
