very beautiful chapel built with stones, I suspect, from the Roman Wall of Tongeren. Nice cemetery around it

The St. Peter's Chapel is a chapel in Vechmaal, a sub-municipality of Heers in Belgium-Limburg. The chapel is located on a slight elevation and is surrounded by the cemetery. This cemetery was originally not walled. There used to be a moat and an earthen wall around it. Today the chapel is surrounded by a hedge. It is located on the Heurnestraat on a small square in the hamlet of Sint-Pieters-Heurne.

The Romanesque chapel is dedicated to Saint Peter.

The Romanesque chapel must have been founded before the end of the 13th century. Presumably the founders are the lords of Horne given the presence of their tombstones.

A new portal was added in 1554, possibly when the rose window was placed above the portal and the original windows were also replaced by marlstone windows with a Gothic profile.

In 1628, a destroyed choir and altar were reported, the cause of which is unclear.

The choir was rebuilt around 1662, to which the date in the east facade refers. The clear separation between nave and choir dates from this period, as do the remains of marlstone frames of the round-arched windows.

Roofing work was carried out in the 17th century and in 1725.

In the 18th century the windows were replaced by limestone windows. At the same time, the interior is probably plastered and decorated. The windows are dated chronogram 1752.

The roofs were restored in 1906.

In 1971-1973 the tower was restored, breaking down a more recent brick portal and repairing the tower and roof.

In 1989-1990 the chapel was thoroughly restored.
