This path was part of the tramway of the NMVB line 495 that ran from Oreye (Oerle) to Vechmaal-Bommershoven-Borgloon-Kortessem-Wimmertingen and so to Hasselt.

Because many sugar beets were transported to the sugar refinery of Oerle via this line and the sugar was removed for distribution, the line was popularly called the sugar tram or beet tram.

The Hasselt-Borgloon-Oreye tram line was built in 1899-1900. The line gave an economic boost to the area. Since a lot of sugar beets were transported, the line was also called the sugar tram, because there was a sugar refinery in Oreye. There are still various relics of this railway line in the landscape, including as a dike or incision, and in many places the railway line is still in use as a footpath or property divider.
