The duck fountain has been in a dilapidated condition since April 2012. At that time, the ducks were torn from the anchorage and stolen on a weekend, when a metal eagle disappeared on the façade of the former State Audit Office - a few pounds of bronze, a worthwhile loot for metal thieves obviously.

In the following years there were various attempts to save the small structure that had built a Moritzberger Stammtisch to Dirk Kehe in June 1996, from further decay. The "kitchen thalers" began to freak out what the stream had washed out of the ruined spout in the fountain wall. Stonemason Thomas Platter made a new water overflow of stone. When a Mittelallee walk with Stadtbaurat Brummer took place in May 2013, a few hours earlier, someone had permanently demolished the well: the pipe for the inflow of water from the "Bergholzquelle" had been torn out, slabs from the edge of the fountain and rubble of the masonry lay next to it. Thereupon threatened the "cheapest" measure on the part of the city - to dispose of the duck fountain completely.

Town Planning Officer Brummer left room for maneuver: the Moritzbergers could restore the Duck Fountain, the first self-financed and built beautification object of the 1990s, on their own initiative. The police had meanwhile set the investigation against the unknown metal thieves. Amongst the Moritzbergers concerned, the idea prevailed that the ducks should not be restored as cast metal but in stone.

Steinmetz Christian Prenzler proposed the project to his employees in the spring of 2014. Already in June, two ducks from Thüster limestone were finished. Sarah Helbig, a third-year apprentice, designed one, Dana Litzkendorf, a first-year apprentice, the second. The ducks are bigger than the ones made of cast bronze, so two will suffice for the well. "They look rested and a bit sleepy," says sculptor Prenzler. "They should sit on the edge of the well and look at each other - that has something of a loving couple well."

In October, Prenzler plans, the ducks will get their place. He wants to give the creative work of his trainees to the district - as a contribution to the beautification of Berghölzchen and Mittelallee. However, it will be necessary to repair the well wall and the water inlet and insert the water outlet. The costs of these works Prenzler estimates at 700 to 800 euros; if new stones are needed, it will be more expensive. 18 years ago, more than 6,500 D-Marks were collected at the Moritzberg for the construction of the Duck Fountain ...

Nice fountain on Moritzberg. A bit shabby but with its own charm.

At the moment the well isn't running due to the drought.
