In 1920, clay was extracted from the Riegelstein mine. In 1996 the plant was shut down. the pit had tunnels totaling approx. 600 meters and at a depth of 60 meters. Today the historic building houses the mining museum with guided tours.

The Riegelstein mine in the former clay and sand mine area between Eisenberg and Hettenleidelheim was still in operation until 1996; Green clays were mined at a depth of approx. 50 m. After the pits were abandoned, a unique landscape protection area with rare animals and plants was created here.
