Before the First World War, the Wezemaal windmill stood at this location. This mill was destroyed by the Belgian army at the start of the war, to prevent the German army from using the mill as a lookout. After the war, the parish decided to establish a Sacred Heart statue here. The statue, designed by sculptor M. Van de Capelle, was consecrated on September 5, 1926 by Monsignor Tessens.
