The Main Gate, which leads directly from the Main into the historic old town, is the last surviving city gate of the medieval fortifications in Steinheim, which were probably built directly after the city rights were granted in 1320. The complex originally consisted of a main and outer wall, solid and shell towers and 4 city gates. In addition to the Maintor, which was originally built as a double gate, there are still the main wall, the Dilgesturm built as a shell tower and the Mühltor or Untertor, which was also built as a double gate but was closed in the 19th century.
The gate appears today as a three-storey gatehouse with a barrel-vaulted passageway with rabbets for the gate stop and a pitchfork. In the late 15th century or, as engraved in the archway, in 1506, the building was increased by a half-timbered upper storey with quarter-circle struts and overlapping half-man struts. Today's hipped roof has been changed several times, and there is an apartment in the tower.
