Above all, the national monument on the market square, unveiled in 1896, marks Hanau as the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and became one of their landmarks. The statue comes from Professor Syrius Eberle/Munich and perfectly expresses the intellectual collaboration of the two great scholars, just as the brothers were inseparably linked throughout their lives until their death. It forms the starting point of the German Fairy Tale Route from Hanau to Bremen.
