From Wikipedia: In the Middle Ages, the Vils was of great importance as a transport route for the semi-finished iron products made in the Upper Palatinate. In order to be able to operate shipping, numerous weirs were built up. Iron products were transported from Amberg to Regensburg with so-called Vils-Plätten. The destination was the Danube port at the Amberger Stadel above the Stone Bridge. Salt was mainly loaded for the return trip. In 1996, for the state garden show in Amberg, Vils plates of this type were recreated based on old documents and used for excursions.
