After the secularization of the Franciscan monastery, the city theater was built into its church consecrated to Saint Bernard in 1803. In the years 1846/47 and 1862/63 it was redesigned several times, closed in 1952 due to dilapidation and subjected to a general renovation from 1975 to 1978.

The “flaming sermons” of St. Johannes Capistran in 1452 gave the impetus for the establishment of a Franciscan monastery in Amberg, which was made possible by the Amberg citizen Johannes Pachmann by donating his property on the Vils. The monastery, consecrated in 1453, was abolished during the Reformation in 1555, and in 1627 the Reformates, a new branch of the Franciscan order, returned to the Vils to devote themselves to pastoral care until secularization.
