The renovated abbey of Bornem will receive a new orchard in 2019. The old orchard, which used to be in exactly the same place, is being reconstructed under the name Trees up to the sky. An archaeologist discovered in old documents what it looked like and which breeds existed at the time.

Abbot Leo, the inspirer of the orchard, died on Friday, February 24, 2023 in the AZ Rivierenland in Bornem. He was 83 years old.

The old adventure is restored to its former glory on the initiative of Abbot Leo, nature guides and with the support of local residents. 38 tall fruit trees now adorn the garden. Two monkey species are nevertheless given special attention. The Saint Bernard apple and the lemon apple had almost completely disappeared. The fruit produce is used to make cider and jam every year.
