    Jews in Żarki
The first followers of the Mosaic religion appeared in this part of the Polish state as early as the Middle Ages. In Żarki, at that time a small town of agriculture and crafts, Jews probably settled in the 16th century and then they built the first synagogue. In the next century, there was already a kehilla, i.e. a Jewish community. According to data from 1741, the town was inhabited by 113 adult Jews at that time, and they had a second prayer house, which also housed a cheder - an elementary religious school.
There were two synagogues, a religious school and a cemetery in Żarki. The industrial development of Żarki took place in the 19th century. There was a large proportion of the Jewish population in this, which soon began to outnumber the Poles. Jews were among the most thriving entrepreneurs, they were also craftsmen and traders; they lived mainly in the Market Square and the adjacent streets. Despite the fact that their number in the city decreased after World War I, they still constituted nearly half of the population. The Holocaust put an end to the presence of Jews in Żarki.
    About the synagogue
The new, third synagogue in Żarki was erected in 1870 at today's ul. Moniuszko. For a long time, it functioned in the vicinity of the older one, built in the classicist style, and demolished only after the Second World War. The new building was built on a rectangular plan, in a characteristic Moorish-Neo-Romanesque style. The distinguishing feature of it were two turrets, built on the sides of the main facade. The appearance of the building was changed by the reconstruction in the 1950s. Inside, the original layout has been preserved: the main hall, where in the eastern wall, in a tiny annex, there was a place for the Torah (Aron Kodesh), and a bimah in the middle. Until the modernization started in 2009, there was still a balcony to the west, a trace of the former women's gallery. According to religious regulations, people prayed separately - men on the ground floor and women in the gallery.
During World War II, the synagogue was destroyed. After reconstruction, it was adapted to the needs of the Municipal Cultural Center.
The former synagogue has been serving as a community center since the 1950s.
