The Amberg Wedding Fountain almost never came into being. For a long time, no one remembered the Amberg wedding in 1474. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the historian Max Buchner brought this magnificent event back to the public's attention.

Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate arranged this magnificent wedding, which went down in Amberg's history. In 1474, Margarete, the daughter of Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, married the Elector Palatine, Philipp. It is difficult to put into words how incredibly large the turnout and scope of this event was. The sheer amount of food is astonishing: for example, sources speak of several thousand chickens and eggs as well as an incredible 100,000 liters of wine.

On their way to the wedding, the bride and groom were accompanied by 1,000 riders dressed in red. In total, more than 2,000 guests took part in the celebrations. Tournaments and other festivities rounded off the wedding, which lasted a total of five days. One cannot deny the fascination that the people of Amberg felt about this event.

In 1474 the daughter of the Duke of Bavaria married the Prince Elector of the Palatinate. The wedding of Margarete and Philipp went down in history as the "Amberg Wedding". It is one of the largest and most glamorous weddings of the Middle Ages, it lasted 5 days and more than 2000 guests attended. The "wedding fountain" created by the artist Engelbert Süß in 2000 on the market square is a reminder of this.

After a civil wedding in the town hall, a champagne reception is usually held around the fountain.

            Amberg Wedding Fountain.
The Wedding Fountain commemorates the historic wedding in 1474, which was arranged by Elector Frederick I of the Palatinate.

After the Amberg wedding was rediscovered at the beginning of the last century, there were many performances as part of festivals that focused on the major event. In order to create a physical souvenir of this milestone, the artist Engelbert Süß built the Amberg Wedding Fountain on the Amberg market square in 2000.

The full-figure sculpture depicts four figures. Among them, of course, the happy bride and groom, who are accompanied by two fools. The bride Margarete proudly shows the admirer her wedding ring.

The base can be used as a place to sit. Dogs can drink here.
Good, distinctive meeting point on the market square.
