The Mariakerk of Uithuizermeeden was built in the middle of the 13th century. The church was further expanded in later centuries. In the 19th century the walls were plastered and the church got its current neoclassical appearance. The old free-standing tower was demolished in 1734. On August 26, 1896, the tower was struck by lightning and burned down. The tower was rebuilt in 1897.
