Just a stone’s throw from the sea in the far western extent of the Lake District National Park, Muncaster Fell forms a verdant ridge in a fantastic location. It’s a modest fell at 758 feet (231 m) and its summit views exceed its charming height. It’s a steep-sided ridge, giving it quite an impressive appearance from afar and there are plenty of trails rambling about the hillside, giving you a wide range of ascent options.
At the far south western end lies Muncaster Castle, a vast and stunning estate usually open for public visits. Along the hill’s northern flank runs the Ravenglass & Eskdale narrow gauge railway line, so as you work your way to the summit, you might catch the sight of a steam train chugging below.
There are numerous places to begin your ascent, two popular places being Eskdale Green to the north east or Ravenglass to the south west.
The Wainwright Outlying Fell summit of this fell is actually the outcrop 115 feet (35 m) north of the trig point that most people class as the summit of this magnificent fell! Beautiful views to Black Combe and across Eskdale.
