In the southern Harz gypsum karst area is the trowel, a remaining cave in karst rock and the oldest natural monument in the district of Nordhausen. This karst cave is located between Ellrich and Ilfeld near the village of Appenrode in the Kellholz forest. The trowel has an approximately 5 meter deep cave lake that can be seen shimmering from a railing.
