In 1821, the year of the beginning of the Greek
Revolution, many Christians were killed in Chania.
The commemoration of the Cretan liberation struggle, also against the Turkish rule, gave the square its name. The square borders directly on the St. Nicholas Church, in Ottoman times also the ruler's mosque, or Ibrahim mosque.

At Place 1821, the Platanos restaurant is highly recommended: with delicious starters (e.g. bruschette with soutzouki), interesting main courses and good wines.
