Neckerkatzenbach Church of Our Lady:
MARY / REFORMATION HISTORY
THE LEGEND OF THE MIRACULOUS IMAGE OF THE MARY
On the spot where the church stands today, there once stood a mighty oak tree, near which heavenly hymns of praise were often heard. When the tree was felled and sawn in half, an image of Mary with the body of Jesus Christ on her lap was found in the hollow trunk. Because there was no church in Neckarkatzenbach at the time, the image was placed in the middle of the village.
To everyone's astonishment, however, the image returned to its former location during the night.
When the guardians of the image seriously contradicted the claim that the image had been carried back by human hands, the people's devotional zeal grew so great that it was decided to build a pilgrimage church over the tree stump, which was to serve as an altar.
