Of the four city gates that used to secure access to the city of Kempen, only the gate tower of the cow gate remains. It takes its name from an old cattle drive that led to the lush pastures in the Bruch to the north. The modern statue of St. Nicholas above the gateway is a reminder that from here you got to the St. Nicholas Chapel at the level of the "Schloot", a border crossing to the Duchy of Geldern. Religious representations at such gates should serve the devotion when leaving the city and the defense against dangers such as war and plague. From 1896 to 1898 the cow gate was rebuilt to what it is today. The different color of the bricks clearly shows where the 3rd floor with its Gothic towers was placed.
