Also a very good place to stop for a meal.

Built in the second half of the 15th century, with its brick façade behind which the remaining walls are made of half-timbering, it is the oldest house in the city with a stone gable. Because of its striking design it was called “The Stone House on the Market”.

The brick cross on the six-step stepped gable reminds us that the rector of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit lived here. This was an extensive building complex that emerged from a foundation founded in 1390, of which only this house and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on the right remain.

But it was more of a hospice than a hospital in the modern sense: behind the two buildings there used to be hospital buildings that did not offer medical care, but rather shelter for pilgrims and homeless, elderly and sick citizens.

The people of Kempen called the facility “The Inn” in the language of their time, which corresponds to the original meaning (Latin hospitalis = hospitable). The foundation and name of the old Hospital of the Holy Spirit live on in today's hospital in the city.
