The Ticino River flows through the Piottino Gorge and separates the Alta Leventina from the Media Leventina with a height difference of around 150 meters.
The gorge has always been a major obstacle on the Gotthard road as it is very narrow and surrounded by high rocks. It was not until the end of the 14th century that a mule track ran through the gorge. The Gotthard Railway Company built the two spiral tunnels Freggio and Prato to overcome the height difference caused by the Piottino Gorge.
