In the west of the city of Geesthacht, bordering the lock canal, there is the nature reserve “Besenhorster Sandberge und Elbsandwiesen” with a size of 150 hectares. When biking you can also see the remains of the Düneberger powder factory, which was located there until the end of the Second World War.

The area, which is home to rare animals and plants, has been under special protection since 1993. Immediately adjacent is the Hamburg nature reserve "Borghorster Elblandschaft" with the Borghorster dunes and the Elbe meadows (Kringelwiesen).

The nature reserve is characterized by its dry, lime-rich sand lawn, its dunes and silver grass meadows and its old oak forests. It is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000. This unique landscape is the rest of the once much larger inland dunes, the only ones in Schleswig-Holstein that were formed after the last Ice Age around 10,000. The large mountains of sand moved with the wind and at times posed a serious threat to the Alt-Geesthachters. It was only with the founding and expansion of the Düneberg powder factory after 1877 that the dunes were "tamed" or used economically.

Today the inland dune was protected by a barrier tape, so that you could only take pictures from a distance.

But that doesn't matter, because at the entrance of the NSG there is the large inland dune that looks very spectacular.
