St. Mary's Church survived the Second World War largely undamaged and is the main place of worship for the Bishop of Berlin-Brandenburg.
The construction of the church as a parish church in Berlin's medieval New Town probably began around 1270. The first reliable mention can be found in a letter of indulgence from 1294. St. Marien was built as a hall church in the North German-Marken brick Gothic style.
