Traditionally, the Vliet was an important, navigable watercourse with a busy shipping traffic. Evidence of this is the painting 'Annual inauguration of the Peter and Paul Church in Schelle' by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 - 1625) from 1614, which sets the scene for the busy activity on and around the Benedenvliet. During the flood, the Scheldt water penetrated as far as Cleydael castle in Aartselaar.

Together with the Zinkval, the valley of the Bovenvliet forms a beautiful landscape on the border of Schelle with Hemiksem and Aartselaar. The Bovenvliet literally meanders through the landscape here and the Vliet meanders in curves of almost 180 °. This watercourse was heavily used in the Middle Ages. Silent witnesses in the landscape. The Bovenvliet changes from the Provincialebaan at the 'Molens van Hemiksem' (border Schelle - Hemiksem) to the Benedenvliet. In 1472, a 'forced mill' was built on the Molenburg for the Saint Bernard Abbey. Local residents were obliged to grind their grain in this mill.
