    Obelisk Fountain, Schönbrunn Palace
The obelisk fountain, located at the foot of the Schönbrunner Berg, forms the visual accent at the end of the eastern diagonal avenue. Alongside the Gloriette and the Menagerie, it is one of the most important focal points of the garden axes. Like the other garden objects, this fountain was designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and built in 1777. The sculptural work was carried out by Benedikt Henrici, partly based on designs by Wilhelm Beyer.

Is the Obelisk Fountain (Obeliskbrunnen) suitable for a winter visit?

Absolutely! While the gardens are in full bloom during warmer months, the Obelisk Fountain retains its grandeur and historical significance in winter. The sculptural details, including the gilded turtles and the eagle, are still impressive, and the atmosphere can be quite serene, especially after a fresh snowfall. Just be sure to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for potentially icy paths.

Both are prominent landmarks in the Schönbrunn Gardens, but they serve different purposes and offer distinct experiences. The Obelisk Fountain is an intricate sculptural monument at the foot of Schönbrunner Berg, known for its symbolic obelisk, river deities, and hidden caves. The Gloriette, on the other hand, is a grand colonnaded structure atop the hill, offering panoramic views of the palace and Vienna, and houses a cafe. The fountain is about detailed artistry at ground level, while the Gloriette is about imperial grandeur and vistas.

How long should I plan for a visit to the Obelisk Fountain?

To fully appreciate the Obelisk Fountain's details, including its symbolic sculptures and hidden caves, you might spend anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. However, as it's part of the larger Schönbrunn Palace Gardens, most visitors integrate it into a longer stroll through the park, which can easily take 1-3 hours or more, depending on how many other attractions you wish to see.

What unique features should I look for when visiting the Obelisk Fountain?

Beyond its impressive height and overall design, look for the four gilded turtles supporting the obelisk, symbolizing stability. Observe the eagle perched on a golden sphere at the very top, representing imperial power. At the base, seek out the figures of river deities and the cascading water. Most interestingly, try to spot the two concealed caves: an upper one with leaf decorations and water elements, and a lower one with three entrances at the basin level.
