"In the course of the Reformation, the town of Herchen, which belongs to the county of Berg in the Blankenberg district, became Lutheran and the formerly Catholic parish church of St. Peter became Protestant in 1578. The few Catholics who remained in the town initially used the old church of the Herchen monastery, before St. Peter served as a simultaneous church for both denominations from the 17th century until 1876. The year 1672 is given as the beginning of the simultaneum, i.e. the guarantee of the free practice of both denominations, for Herchen (HbHistSt NRW 2006).
