The church of Santa Chiara is splendid with its decorated rose window and the Romanesque facade with these arches that seem to balance its forms.

The Basilica of Santa Chiara is dedicated to St. Clare of Assisi. The construction of the church and the adjacent monastery began in 1257, three years after the death of Saint Clare and one year after her canonization. Until then, the nuns had lived in the convent of San Damiano. Clare was the companion of St. Francis of Assisi. She left her wealthy family home to live in extreme poverty. To this day, her remains rest in the crypt of the church built in her honor.

"Saint Clare is buried in the Basilica of Santa Chiara [Saint Clara]. The church, which was begun in 1257 and consecrated in 1265, is a single-nave building with a transept and has a simple Gothic shape. In the right side chapel is the original of the cross picture, from which Francis heard the voice in San Damiano. The bones of Saint Clare are in a glass sarcophagus in the crypt."
