The Kiel Canal was already under construction and increasing traffic on the Kiel Fjord was expected when the DGzRS decided to establish a rescue station near its outlet into the Baltic Sea at the end of the 19th century. In 1894, one year before the canal opened, Laboe received its first lifeboat. Today the station secures an area that is equally busy with commercial and leisure shipping.
