The old villages in the Val Bavona are called "terre", Sonlèrt is one of the larger of them and built compactly around some large boulders. They all rest like cairns in the midst of dark-green chestnut forests, which softly line the valley floor, behind which cliffs rise on both sides: high, steep, smooth, almost inaccessible - it is one of the narrowest, deepest valleys in the Alps.
