The tunnel could also be used to avoid a blown bridge crossing. The tunnel is part of the "Schöllenrundweg" at the Teufelsbrücke, actually also has military motives and is really cold and damp when passing through it.

At the end of the 19th century the Gotthard area was secured militarily. Fortresses, barracks and bunkers should protect the country from enemy attacks.
Special attention was paid to the Schöllenen Gorge. In the worst case, they even wanted to blow up the Teufelsbrücke.
However, it would have been possible to bypass the gorge via these tunnels hewn into the mountain.

At the end of the circular path you will find an old military tunnel where you can walk around the bridge. During the war, they were prepared to blow up the bridge, but wanted to keep the way open by digging a secret tunnel. A lot of work was done in the rock. Russian troops fought under General Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suvorov against Napoleon's soldiers and finally defeated the French.
