The Syrabach, also called Syra for short, is only nine kilometers long.

The mountain spur created by the confluence of the Syrabach and the Weiße Elster in geological terms from both bodies of water served to build the town of Plauen. The name was probably derived from the old Sorbian word zir, which stands for "pasture" or "fodder".

The source is about 520 m above sea level. NN in the Mehltheur forest near the B282. Here the stream flows in an easterly direction, leaves the forest at the Hainwiese and shortly thereafter passes the town of Syrau, which was named after it.
