But what do Plauen and New York have in common?

It is Fritz Cremer's sculpture “Ascending”.

Cremer created the bronze sculpture in 1966/67 and the GDR donated it to the United Nations in 1975. Since then, the sculpture has stood in the park of the UN headquarters in New York.

Fritz Cremer, a staunch communist, wanted the work to depict the quest for liberation and the rise of man becoming aware of his own role.

A second cast of the sculpture was placed in Plauen in 1989 on a meadow below the summit of the Bärenstein. Next to it on a sign you can read that it is dedicated to the peoples fighting for their freedom.
